Oniisama’s back

Ah, yes. It’s been a while since I heard that characteristic and slightly creepy phrase but guess what. Oniisama is back, baby. That’s right everyone, your favourite slightly inappropriate magical siblings are back for more future-cyber-magic action.

Okay, that might have been an odd introduction to a review but hear me out. Among the many things that I was left with after watching the first season, the most prevalent perhaps was an irrational and passionate aversion towards the whole overly affectionate brother/sister familiarity. Don’t get me wrong though, I’m not blaming Tatsuya. No, no. I blame Miyuki and all her emotional outbursts. I mean come on. Tatsuya practically did most of the things he did in season one because she pushed him to. Oniisama this and oniisama that. Super annoying. Well, at least that’s my take on all that unstable chemistry.

Family bonding aside, Mahouka Koukou no Rettousei season one was pretty entertaining. First of all, it was a 26 episode season filled to the brim with different characters, action scenes, diverse settings and a series of story arcs. All in all, it was a satisfying season with a climactic explosive finale. Sure, the premise of this anime was not breathtaking but the implementation and development were good.

It’s no surprise then that this new season has been eagerly anticipated. We are definitely bound to experience more of oniisama’s irregularly overpowered self being awesome at everything. He is making it hard not to feel bad for all the other magicians though. The guy is practically a walking nuclear warhead with the ability to heal mortal wounds and the brain power of NASA. Let’s not kid ourselves, this is not a masterpiece but it simply doesn’t have to for it to be entertaining. I for one am happy to see The Irregular at Magic High School back. Despite having to put up with all the constant “oniisamas”.
