Penta is five, tonic (as in tonos) is note. So, it’s a scale with five different notes in an octave. There can be major or minor, hemitonic or anhemitonic pentatonics. Major and minor pentatonic scales are not only related; they are technically the same scale starting from a different note. See major pentatonic scale and minor pentatonic scale for more info.
