Comment: Music ‘catch-phrase’ of 2018<span class="wtr-time-wrap block after-title"><span class="wtr-time-number">2</span> min read</span>

So, I decided to watch IDOLiSH7 since Episode 1 of the second season had a special screening and is now available for us to stream. I believe it will start airing regularly during Spring 2020. But that’s not the point. I was about to get to know the characters of the male idol group. 7 minutes in and I was about to get absorbed. And what did I hear? I heard something familiar. And it made such an impression that I clicked PAUSE, went on YouTube, searched “ODD FUTURE”, clicked on the full version and skipped to the part that wasn’t included in the My Hero Academia Season 3 OP.

I’m about to get a bit technical, but I’ll keep it to a minimum. The phrase I’m referring to, when stripped down is just three notes: G, Eb and F. So, if you start with a rest, and slightly elongate the second note, you’ll have the rhythmic pattern that you want. Now, all you need is to create the two ending bits of the phrase, as it’s repeated twice. Let’s make the first one C-Bb-C-Bb and let’s make the other one F-C-F-C. It’s quite simple, really catchy and with just a small tweak, you can have twice the duration. So, for the record, the notes of the entire phrase are G-Eb-F (x3) C-Bb-C-Bb, G-Eb-F (x3) F-C-F-C. Then you can repeat the entire thing and voilà, you have a ~15 second riff.

To listen to what I’m talking about, have a look at “ODD FUTURE”. The entire thing I described is just these 8 seconds, until you hear the words “odd future”.

You may think “yeah, but why are you telling me this?”
It’s simple.

Not only did I find a phrase with the same melodic line and the same rhythm… Hell, the notes were only a semitone higher in the IDOLiSH7 soundtrack. And to me, that’s interesting. So, I wanted to share.

But to give the credit where it’s due, I have to say that the OST of IDOLiSH7 was just a bit slower at 100 BPM, when compared to its rival’s 128 BPM. And that’s about it.

Another similarity is that both came out on 2018. Not to mention that both are related to their corresponding boy-bands and are featured in anime.

What can I say… Great minds think alike…
